We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: There are countless benefits of coconut oil for skin. Rich in antioxidants with anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial properties, coconut oil is an incredible source of both protective and healing properties for the skin barrier. Coconut oil is composed primarily of medium chain fatty acids, “healthy fats” that effectively repair, soften, and soothe the skin's barrier. Because of its unique composition, coconut oil absorbs deeply into pores, effortlessly trapping moisture while still remaining lightweight on our skin. On top of those skin benefits, a recent study by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) found that coconut oil has an approximate SPF value of 8. This means it can also act as an additional protective barrier for your skin from sun damage and UV rays. This may come as a surprise, but our skin needs oil. We naturally produce sebum, a type of oil, to protect our skin barrier and maintain hydration and softness. Much like sebum’s moisturizing properties, lotions with high active levels of oils are particularly effective because of their ultra-moisturizing qualities. Coconut oil is found to be effective and safe when applied as a moisturizer, making it an ideal ingredient for dry skin. According to this study, “Plant oils have long been used on the skin for cosmetic and medical purposes because they have been found to have many positive physiological benefits. Plant oil application may act as a protective barrier to the skin by an occlusive effect, allowing the skin to retain moisture.” Coconut oil has an occlusive effect, meaning it reduces the evaporation of water from the skin by forming a barrier. Because coconut oil lotions are thick and creamy, they work to seal in moisture and soothe and protect the skin barrier in the long run. About one-third of our Whipped Coconut Oil Body Cream is in “oily phase”, which means it’s formulated with natural butters and oils like coconut oil, shea butter, and sunflower seed oil. Vegetable glycerin is our #3 ingredient, acting as a natural humectant, which is a substance that pulls moisture from the air into the skin. These ultra-moisturizing ingredients at high levels make our coconut oil lotion the ideal formula for baby-soft skin, working especially well to seal in moisture during post-bath massages.
